Internship FAQs

What is the leadership internship class?

In the LEAD program, you can take a class, PUBP 4651, that is a leadership internship. The first step is to get an internship off campus. Then you must do the readings and writings necessary-see requirements below. The goal of the internship class is to apply leadership principles and concepts to what you can observe at the organization where you are doing the internship. You could think of it as a type of laboratory experiment-comparing leadership theory with practice.

What kind of internship would work?

Almost any internship would work as long as it:

  • is off campus
  • allows you the opportunity to observe leadership activities
  • allows you to average 20 hours per week of work over the semester

Almost any internship will allow you to observe leadership activities such as teamwork, leadership styles, etc.

What are the class requirements?

The class includes:

  • Readings on key leadership principles areas and meetings with Dr. Thompson to review these readings.
  • Journaling on 8-10 questions which should be at least 1-2 pages for each question.
  • Doing leadership surveys of people in leadership positions at the place of employment (Complete 2 surveys)
  • Completing a reflection essay on leadership issue(s) raised by your internship (7-9 Pages)
  • Completing internship forms:
    • Internship Learning Agreement
    • Internship Site Agreement
    • Final Site Evaluation by Employer

Can I do the internship out of state or out of the country?

As long as the class requirements are met-yes.
